About the project

Gathering 1 invited people into the Whitworth’s Grand Hall for an afternoon of durational movement, conversation and film. Movement, listening and exchange unfolded together, allowing personal histories to become a shared and living resource.

Dani Abulhawa and Sara Spies performed Formwork, a participatory durational score borrowing its structure from the construction of transitions for a skatepark. Through measuring, marking and building, the work inscribed bodies in space and generated a temporary community with visitors.

Amy Voris held conversations about women’s paid and unpaid work, familial histories and vocational grandmothers. Hannah Buckley made the two films shown during the gathering: Untitled (Elsie and Hannah), created with her Nana Elsie Brown and filmmaker Sarah Hill, and Untitled (Vagina), made with the help of more than thirty volunteers aged between ten and ninety-two.
